Complete Farm Shed Solutions
Farm sheds have different engineering and construction from a domestic shed and fall under separate Building Code requirements.
For example, a standard garage would generally be recognised as a domestic type of building and would have an importance level of 2. A farm shed, on the other hand, would generally have an importance level of 1.
The type of farm sheds Queensland Shed Markets has built in the past includes:
- Shearing sheds
- Plant equipment and machinery sheds
- Hay sheds
- Piggery, dairy and machinery sheds
- Fertiliser and grain storage sheds
Farm Sheds vs Domestic Sheds
Farm sheds are a variation of the domestic shed, used in conjunction with general farming equipment and requirements. They are not your typical double or triple garage – the engineering and construction are different, as well as the Building Code requirement of what is known as the “importance level”.
For example, a standard garage would generally be recognised as a domestic type of building (i.e. for domestic use) and would have an importance level of “2”. A farm shed, on the other hand, would generally have an importance level of “1”, which means lighter gauge steel is used in its construction. Domestic types of structures at an importance level of “2” will use heavier gauge steel, and more of it, in order to be safer for domestic use.
To assist in determining between the two types of buildings, and which is more suitable for your intended use, you need to ask yourself: if a violent cyclone or storm was to hit and destroy the shed, would any flying debris hurt or damage anyone or anything within the vicinity of the building? If the answer to that question is yes, then your farm shed should be rated as an importance level of “2” rather than “1”, and needs to be built as a domestic type of structure.
What is the vicinity? In Queensland, there is no official rule determining the safe distance or vicinity. However, at Queensland Shed Markets we practice lessons learns from real events and experience, and as such as we recommend a vicinity of at least 200 metres. But in every case, common sense should always prevail.
Please refer to the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) website for more information about the building code requirements for constructing a shed on your property.
